Cartonera Publishers' Books on Display in MERIT Library

by Amanda Manteufel 1. October 2009 10:16

MERIT Library is excited to take part in a unique event during the Wisconsin Book Festival this October.  In support of the Cartonera Publishers Conference, on October 8th and 9th, MERIT Library will be displaying some colorful and fun cartonera books during the end of September and the first half of October.

What's a Cartonera book? you may be asking.   Cartonera books play a special role to support literacy in Latin America.   Paloma Celis-Carbajal, the Ibero-American Studies Librarian, explains "the cartonera publishing phenomenon originated in Buenos Aires in 2003.  Cartoneras books are hand-made from recycled cardboard collected off the streets by cartoneras, or garbage pickers, who then sell the cardboard they collect to cartonera publishers.  The cardboard covers are hand-painted in the styles that are unique to each of the eight Latin American publishing houses.  UW-Madison Libraries hold one of the largest and most comprehensive collections in the United States."

So if you are a teacher looking to introduce a new and fun topic to your classroom, or just someone interested in these cool books and the conference, please come check out the display, which will be up mid-September in MERIT Library! Additionally, there will be several workshops taking place on October 9th, for students, staff and community members to learn more about and make their own cartonera books.

To read more about the Cartonera Publishers Conference and to find out about workshop dates, please see http://www.library.wisc.edu/cartoneras/.

What's a "LibGuide" anyway?

by Amanda Manteufel 1. April 2009 11:45

MERIT Library is currently in the process of enhancing our resource guides with Web 2.0 tools and a more user-friendly and interactive design. We recently completed the first guide, Physical Education Teacher Education, using the LibGuides platform, and we are moving forward with other education-related subjects. These guides are great aides for doing research and having many library and Web resources gathered in one place. If you have suggestions for resources in any subject area or would like to collaborate on a LibGuide in your subject area, please e-mail Amanda Manteufel.

Fun-filled March displays inside MERIT Library

by Amanda Manteufel 4. March 2009 17:59
Come celebrate with us! March presents many events worthy of balloons and confetti, including Dr. Seuss' birthday, Spring Break, and the 100th Day of School. Stop-in MERIT Library to find activities, resources, and books by the best-loved children's authors on our Read Across America display (in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday). In addition, pick-up a fun audiobook or DVD for your listening or viewing pleasure over Spring Break (audiobooks make great roadtrip companions), and discover all things "100" as area schools complete their 100th day of school this month.

Hope to see you soon!

Simply enter the expected start and completion dates of your dissertation and the calculator will generate a plan that includes every phase of the process along with a suggested amount of time for each step. In addition to the timeline, the Dissertation Calculator provides strategies and links to support resources for each stage. Try it out yourself and let us know what you think.

November Displays -- An Election Ends and American Education Week Begins

by Amanda Manteufel 1. November 2008 14:34
After November 4th, the CIMC will be replacing its Election 2008 display with an American Education Week display. This year's display will feature general resources for and about teachers, in addition to the three books to be discussed at this year's CCBC book discussion (held at the CIMC!). Be sure to check out the week's events and perhaps read one of the three book discussion books (all on reserve at the CIMC).

The month of November is also National Native American Month and the CIMC has designed a display with classroom resources for all ages. Stop by and pick up a free copy of Native Wisconsin: official guide to Native American Communities in Wisconsin.

As always, we hope you come by to see what resources we have to offer you both in and out of the classroom!
