Help and Resources for Migrating to Canvas

Summer 2016, MERIT staff are working closely with UW Madison campus partners to prepare for the adoption of Unizen along with Canvas, a new learning management system. Both Moodle and Desire2Learn remain on campus up until Summer 2018 to allow for a gradual approach to migrating course sites. See the UW Madison Canvas information page for up to date information, a migration timeline, Canvas workshops and help resources.

Advantage to Canvas include:

  • A clean, intuitive interface
  • Integrated peer review functionality
  • SpeedGrader (instructors can view, annotate, comment on, and grade submissions without downloading and re-uploading files)
  • Course website design flexibility
  • Easily create and update online content
  • Intuitive assignment and grading options
  • Group collaboration workspace
  • Easy to integrate external learning applications
  • Integrated Media Recorder (to easily include audio or video comments to personal messages, assignments, course discussions, and even graded work)
  • Online rubric functionality to aid in learning assessment
  • Ability to map student participation to learning outcomes
  • Simpler to use on portable devices (smartphones, tablets)

Come See What’s New!

Welcome back!  We’ve got a few new things for you to see and experience in MERIT Library!

First, we are sporting brand-new carpeting!  You will see our gray and red herringbone flooring upon your first step into the library.  We’ve spiffed up some signage and the bulletin boards as well.  We hope you like it!

Second, we have a new combined service desk.  In the space that used to have the old circulation desk, you will find a new desk with a new configuration that combines all your help needs.  The circulation staff remains, and is now joined by the library reference staff and the IT help desk staff. We hope this new arrangement will be easier for our patrons to navigate.

Third, we have a new collaboration table that has a large flat-screen monitor.  The table is located on the South wall of the open library area.

Fourth, we still have print services and our microwave/café area, they have just swapped locations!  Both are adjacent to the atrium.  The print station is on the North side with adjacency to the service desk.  The microwave/café area is on the East side.

And finally, we have new circulating equipment including new projectors!

As always, MERIT values our patrons’ feedback.  Please let us know what you think of the changes we’ve made!  You can provide feedback directly to Jim Jonas or Sabrina Messer.
