Equipment Fine Appeal Process

If you would like to appeal a fine or fees associated with equipment you borrowed from MERIT, please fill-out the Equipment Fine Appeal form completely and with as much detail as possible.

  • You have until the end of the academic term during which the equipment was borrowed to appeal any fines (for example: if a fine is received in March, you must appeal by May)
  • You will be notified within one week of submitting an appeal whether the appeal is approved or denied (with a stated reason for approval/denial)
  • For questions on how to fill out the form, feel free to ask us by contacting the MERIT public service desk: in-person, by email (library@education.wisc.edu), or by phone (608-263-4750)

Be aware, the following reasons will result in the denial of the appeal:

  • Unaware of the due date
    • Due date is verbally communicated at checkout
    • 2 automatic email reminders are sent from the GLS InfoLab Technology Group (technologycirculation@library.wisc.edu); 1st sent 39 hours in advance, the 2nd sent 15 hours in advance of the due date
    • Due date is available to view in the InfoLab Patron Portal account
  • Unaware of MERIT hours
    • MERIT open hours are available on the MERIT website
    • MERIT open hours are posted throughout Teacher Education building
    • MERIT open hours are listed on the UW Libraries website
    • MERIT open hours are available to view in the InfoLab Patron Portal
  • Unaware of equipment policies (did not read the equipment policies)
    • By checking out MERIT equipment with your current UW WisCard you agree to and accept the policies posted online (and available in print).
    • Policies are available on the InfoLab Patron Portal
    • Policies are available on the MERIT website
    • A paper copy of loan policies is available at MERIT service desk
  • Returned equipment to the MERIT drop-box on Clymer place
    • There is a sign on the drop-box stating equipment may not be placed inside the box. You must return equipment to MERIT public service desk
  • Making an appeal after the academic term during which the equipment was checked-out
