The SOE Development Team provides technical support and development services for research projects. Our goal is to help you find practical, sustainable solutions—whether that means building something new, improving what you already have, or identifying existing tools that meet your needs.

Services We Provide

We can assist with a variety of tasks, including:

  • Developing new web applications
  • Modifying or extending existing applications
  • Designing, creating, and hosting databases
  • Writing custom integrations between systems
  • Cleaning and formatting data
  • Building custom websites
  • Creating interactive data visualizations
  • Developing custom WordPress plugins

We’re also available for consultation to help you evaluate your options. If an off-the-shelf solution is available, we’ll share options and what we know about current use at UW-Madison. If a custom or hybrid approach is more appropriate, we’ll help you plan for that too.

Getting Started

Consultations are free, and we’re happy to talk with you at any point in your project. That said, we recommend reaching out early—especially during the planning phase—so we can help with budgeting and technical considerations.

Development work is billed at $87/hour.

Ongoing Support and Maintenance

Custom applications require ongoing attention to remain secure and functional. It’s important to plan for future updates and changes. All support is charged at our hourly rate. Typical ongoing needs may include:

  • Security reviews and patching
  • Generating new reports
  • Migrating to improved hosting environments
  • Updates for new technologies or compliance requirements
  • Support from the development team
  • Enhancements or changes requested by the user
